The days are getting longer. As we jump on our bicycles and head into the city, the cool winter breeze still kisses our checks when we pass the tens of hundreds of thousands of bicycles parked along the city’s streets. Almost all look just the same. The Bough Bike, designed by our maker Jan Gunneweg, is a welcomed alternative …
“Move by Nature”
Jan Gunneweg is a Dutch designer with a love for natural products.
“If you design from nature you will always create something that people feel comfortable with.”
The days are getting longer: we wake up to brighter mornings and bask in the evening glow just a little while more. We can hear the birds chirping and calling on spring to cover Amsterdam in a new coat of regeneration, renewal and possibilities. It’s so close we can almost touch it. But for now, as we jump on our bicycles and head into the city, the cool winter breeze still kisses our checks and the wind still whips through our hair while our hands are bundled in our woolen gloves.
As we whizz through the city, we pass the tens of hundreds of thousands of bicycles parked along the city’s streets, ring our bells at those who try to cross in front of us and wait patiently at traffic lights until the green light signals it’s time to go. It wouldn’t be Amsterdam without its abundance of bicycles, the simple iron construction with two wheels, a steering wheel and a saddle that’s so familiar to us. And those tens of hundreds of thousands of them almost all look just the same.
The Bough Bike, designed by Jan Gunneweg, is a welcomed alternative. The sturdy, robust wooden construction, remarkable in its simple beauty and unique functionality, was Jan’s attempt to bring nature back to the urban landscape. Fueled by a passion for natural products, the Bough Bike is made using oak wood from environmentally friendly managed forests in France. Not only sustainable but durable too, as wood only becomes more beautiful as the years pass by.
And soon, when we welcome spring with open arms, we will be heading to the beaches, the forests and the fields, to follow in the footsteps of Jan Gunneweg and “be moved by nature”.
