GET TOGETHER CAFFENOL
2015 October 11
WHEN WE FIRST HEARD ABOUT CAFFENOL AS A METHOD OF DEVELOPING ANALOGUE FILM, WE WERE CHARMED BY IT'S SIMPLICITY. ON SUNDAY OCTOBER 11TH WE GATHERED AT OUR VENUE SPACES FOR AN INTIMATE CAFFENOL GET-TOGETHER. Our makers Madri van Veldhuizen and Anna Meijer from Lomography Benelux were preceded by Joyce and Andres de Lange, the lifestyle and travel photographer duo behind on a hazy morning.
Before we dived into the fascinations of the Caffenol process, Joyce and Andres gave us a short introduction on (film) photography. As everyone will agree, a good photo will pragmatically be the result of a well-chosen balance between your technical input like exposure, aperture, iso/ASA and shutter speed. When photography meets authenticity and style, a good photo will be so much more though.
Joyce and Andres encouraged us to find a personal balance between savvy technique and creative choices. And precisely in contrast with digital photography, shooting analogue film requires an extra dose of thought that goes into composing and capturing an image. When handing out a lomography camera to each of us, Madri van Veldhuizen and Anna Meijer provoked us even more to find a candid urban point of view.
At this mid October day Amsterdam was at it’s best, enveloped in crispy autumn weather. We loaded our La Sardina-camera – orinoco ochre – and went for a walk. We all had 36 frames to our disposal and until our films were developed we had no idea whether it was any good. Attentively taking our photos – ‘shooting from the hip’ – the afternoon was filled with a certain mystery and magic.
Caffenol is a film developer using simple household products free from chemicals. The only substance which is hard to replace by a non-chemical is the fixer. We were excited, thrilled and super curious about the developing part. While stirring instant coffee, washing soda and vitamin C in an aqueous solution, our curiosity increased even more.
With a well-balanced ratio of our own Caffenol recipe we should obtain some specific low-contrast end results. Developing film is a slow process. It took time, but when the first results were there, we all were pretty amazed about the tonal quality of our photos.
This day had it all, developing analogue film with Caffenol is pure fun! We attentively created some very personal images surrounded by inspiring company in a beautiful city. Refuse to be rushed sometimes, there really is a lot to explore to simplify your life …
Thank you all!
Shoot from the hip! ” Your camera loves to be in the moment, experiencing life and the vitality of being.
Don’t hide behind it; break free from nonsensical conventions. ” ( lomography.com )
Don’t think! ” Throw your intellectual socialisation over board, let the unfiltered flow of information circulate freely, untreated and unrated in your mind. Shoot, feel, perceive and shoot, have fun, shoot whatever catches your eye, whatever attracts you, astounds you, excites you, seduces you. “ ( lomography.com )
The copyrights of the images are with on a hazy morning. The images have been photographed with care for Simply Slow. Please keep this in mind and treat them the same, thank you.
